Mayor on Future of Memorial Arena

Mayor Neil Ellis won’t speculate on what the future holds for one of Belleville’s oldest buildings. The Memorial Arena debate is simmering after comments last week from city officials that this will be the final season for skating at the 80-year old facility in the downtown. Ellis told the Lorne Brooker Show, this morning, that council will consider all options at budget time early in the new year. The Mayor wondered if there’s a group of local residents that would take over the operation and cover the operating costs at the Memorial.

Residents Betty Burkitt and Floyd Crawford have assembled a team aimed at keeping the second oldest arena in the country functioning. They plan to appear as a delegation before council in early January.
